Bieber’s performance at the MTV VMAs not only proved his millions of fans remain loyal despite his brushes with the law and often offensive antics but seemed to have rehabilitated his reputation in the media.
When he returned to the stage after a climactic flight above the audience, he was clearly overcome with emotion from the deafening cheers of fans and standing ovation of his peers.
The last time he had performed at the controversial awards ceremony five years ago, he had been booed.
This time, he was wildly cheered as he bent over, sobbing with relief.

The lyric seemed to lament how the Canadian pop star had been exiled by friends, including ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, when his personal life hit the skids.
He appears to pay tribute to his lost love in the video for What Do You Mean, with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it piece of graffiti.
But the Hillsong hang in Sydney a couple of months ago appeared to help Bieber get his act together.
He was mobbed by fans at the Homebush event and happily posed for dozens of selfies with the hysterical teen girls.
It will be interesting to discover what topics his minders rule off limits for his interviews during the promo tour in Melbourne and Sydney from September 27 to 30.
