Hunt For Suspects After Illinois Cop Shot Dead

Thirty-year veteran police officer Lt Joe Gliniewicz was gunned down while in pursuit of three suspects on foot, say authorities.

A manhunt is under way in northern Illinois where a police officer has been shot dead.
Authorities said the officer was involved in a foot pursuit when he was fatally shot in Fox Lake, about 55 miles north of Chicago.
The officer, identified as Lieutenant Joseph Gliniewicz, had radioed at around 8am local time that he was chasing three men on foot.
Dispatch lost communication with him a short time later.

He had been stripped of his gun and other equipment, said Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose.

Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit called the killing a "senseless tragedy".

He said: "Today, not only did Fox Lake lose a family member, I lost a very dear friend."
Lt Gliniewicz, 52, was affectionately known as "GI Joe" to friends and colleagues, the mayor said.
Authorities described the three suspects as two white men and one black man.
Helicopters and police dogs have been deployed to assist in the search.
A sheriff's office spokesman urged all area residents to remain indoors. Nearby schools were put on lockdown as a precaution.
The shooting marked the second time in less than a week a police officer has been gunned down.
Texas deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was shot dead on Friday night at a petrol station in suburban Houston.
Prosecutors said the gunman approached the Harris County deputy from behind and opened fire, striking him 15 times.
The suspected shooter, 30-year-old Shannon Miles, is charged with capital murder.
